Amex Small Business Saturday Returns
American Express has had various promotions over the years that reward cardholders. In one sense they have really pioneered such promotions. One of the first of this type was Amex Small Business Saturday.
Since the week after Thansgiving is the busiest for merchants, American Express created something called Amex Small Business Saturday to encourage their cardholders to shop at small locally owned businesses.
A Roller Coaster Ride
For many years Amex was giving a $25 statement credit for shopping at these merchants. The great thing about this was that it worked for every American Express card including for authorized users.
Since the Amex Small Business Saturday promotion was seen as very generous, many wondered when it would end or at least be made less lucrative. Unfortunately that came last year when Amex reduced the credit from $25 down to $10.
Fortunately that has changed for this year. According to The Points Guy, American Express is changing things up again. They will give up to 3 $10 credits per American Express card when shopping at small business on Amex Small Business Saturday which falls on November 29, 2014.
This means that you will be able to get $30 in statement credit per American Express card! (Including Bluebird & Serve) For many of us, this will add up to several hundreds of dollars.
Maximizing The Promotion
There are two simple ways to maximize this promotion. The first way is to buy things you need from local merchants that you already frequent. Some people wait until Amex Small Business Saturday and then buy a number of items on their list.
The other more attractive thing is to buy merchant gift cards on that day. You may want to buy gift cards for your local merchant to be used later or some merchants sell gift cards to bigger retailers.
In my area there is a large grocery store which is independently owned and thus participates in Amex Small Business Saturday. They sell a variety of gift cards. By buying three $10 gift cards in seperate transactions, I should be able to maximize the promotion.
Conclusion
While more details will emerge regarding Amex Small Business Saturday, the fact that they have increased the amount of credits avaiable is a great thing. Sure you have to break up your purchases, but that just gives you the ability to spread the love among more merchants!
What do you think? Will you be circling your city for local deals on Amex Small Business Saturday?
