Amex SPG Luxury Targeted 125K Offer

Amex SPG Luxury Targeted 125K Offer

American Express was a little tricky in that they released the new Starwood Preferred Guest Luxury Card on Thursday, but then decided to start sending out targeted offers with an increased bonus on Friday. Let’s take a look.

Targeted Offer

Many readers have reported receiving the following offer via email:

  • Earn 125,000 bonus points after $5K in purchases during the first 3 months

Analysis

This bonus is 25,000 points higher than the publicly available bonus and requires the same $5K in spend. If you were hoping to get this card, then I think this is probably the best bonus we’ll see in the short term. Given Amex’s love of temporarily increased bonuses I wouldn’t be surprised to see something larger in the future, but probably not any time soon.

Keep in mind, this card may not be right for you. The other day Mark explained why he is passing on the card and detailed all of its benefits. It is definitely worth a read.

Matching

American Express is normally very stingy about matching offers and I haven’t heard of any successful data points of people matching this one. If you applied on Thursday and were later targeted it might be worth a quick chat to ask for “courtesy points”. Sometimes they will offer these to good customers.

Conclusion

I do think this increased bonus offer does make the card a bit more attractive the first year, however I’m still holding out on an upgrade offer from my regular SPG card so I don’t have to apply for the new one. Were you targeted? Did you get Amex to match? Let us know in the comments!

  1. I received the targeted mail offer about 60 days after opening the account and completing the spend requirement. I called Amex and asked them to honor the extra 25k points. They put me on hold for ten minutes and then agreed to investigate and let me know in 6-8 weeks. Better than a “no” I guess.

  2. Hi shawn,

I know you are a pro of MS. What do you use right now for MS after spg/marriott merge? I used to spend on spg and ink only. Thanks.
