SPG announced their annual shuffle of hotel categories today.  After yesterday’s Club Carlson news, you may be a little frightened, but don’t worry, it isn’t THAT bad.  SPG shifts hotel categories up and down every year based on how they project each hotel to do over the next twelve months.
This year about 20% of SPG’s properties are changing categories. Â Of those properties, 44% are moving down and 56% are moving up. Â Interestingly, most of the properties moving up a category are in the United States. Â On the flip side, a large amount of properties in Asia including China & India are moving down.
The great news here is that SPG didn’t introduce any new categories or raise the points requirements of existing categories like Hyatt did. Â All in all, this is news we can deal with. The new categories go into effect on March 4, 2014, so make sure to book any properties which are changing for the worse before then.
