Another British Airways Devaluation
British Airways devalued American and Alaska Airlines awards less than a year ago, and last week the airline was back at it. This time the devaluation is even heavier.
The last devaluation already made it difficult to justify the use of British Airways Avios for awards on American and Alaska. And now the recent devaluation has increased prices by up to 56% in some cases. When combined with the devaluation from last December, you can now end up paying almost double the points.
These increases affect zones 1 through 4, which means flights between 650 miles and 3,000 miles. It also applies to both Economy and Business Class awards.
Zone | Economy (old) | Economy (new) | Business (old) | Business (new) |
1 – 650 miles | 8,250 | 12,000 | 16,500 | 24,000 |
651 – 1,150 miles | 11,000 | 16,000 | 20,500 | 32,000 |
1,151 – 2,000 miles | 14,500 | 18,000 | 29,000 | 40,000 |
2,001 – 3,000 miles | 16,000 | 20,000 | 42,000 | 50,000 |
Flights longer than 3,000 miles seem unaffected at this point.

Reminder that AA commonly required more miles than BA on AA flights, and actually lowered their redemption requirements for people to spend AA miles on AA metal instead of Avios. With BA raising their redemption rates, AA will probably follow suit.
