  1. PS – I just added a couple of updates from our trip last weekend using a companion certificate. Most notably, the companions earned EQDs and redeemable AA miles based on the $99 fare, and both companions earned EQMs based on flight distance. This is notable because the express terms of the certificates say that the companions won’t earn any points or EQMs/EQDs. ~Craig

  2. Hi Mark – Many thanks for the link! I thought the certificates were an interesting subject for an article, and then even more so as they were introduced as a spend-based benefit and component of the sign-up bonus for the Barclays AA Aviator Red card. I had searched and really found a dearth of information about the certificates, so I thought it would be nice to help people understand the benefit. On the Red card, I’m with you that it’s not worth the $20k spend plus paying the next year’s annual fee to get a 1-companion certificate. As for getting a certificate as part of the sign-up bonus, I’d say that’s a nice-to-have. To me, anyone who flies AA with a companion should find it fairly easy to get at least $250 in value from the certificate. ~Craig

    • I agree. And for people that have a huge MS bandwith it could make sense as well. At least they have your guide to help make that decision now ;).
