What the ‘golden age’ of flying was really like – CNN Travel

A really fun read. The prices were pretty crazy, why it seems like they got so much stuff compared to now. I found the amount of hijackings back in the day to be the most interesting part.

MGM Properties in Las Vegas Have Record-Breaking Quarter – Travel Pulse

With the prices they are charging these days, and with how much they have cut back on things, this doesn’t surprise me. I think the 3rd and 4th quarter are going to be a lot softer though.

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa Full Tour | Pools, Restaurants, Beach and More! – Jackson Jetsetting

I was excited to see my buddy Mark’s walkthrough of the property because of our upcoming stay.

  1. Regarding the ‘golden age of air travel’ – having experienced it (several times) as a kid, it’s easy to see how many who lived it will yearn for the old days. And, it was awesome too – the food was great, the stewardesses were gorgeous and so nice, everyone was nicely dressed and civilized. And, you’d arrive at the airport, check your bags, walk back to the gate and go.

We lived near IAD and if you saw it’s operations in, say, 1970, you’d understand it’s design. It was grand! The gates were right there, there would be a PA announcement, you’d get on the mobile lounge and off you’d go. No security, you walked right in. A drastic increase in hijackings in the early 70s ended that – usually wanting a detour to Cuba for some reason. Flying was indeed expensive and few did it back then. This concept of lines at the airport was really unheard of. And, there were a lot more crashes. We now live in the safest period in aviation history. Back in the day, there would easily be a big crash maybe once a month. We barely paid attention to those overseas because they were that common in the news. Now, if a commercial airliner goes down anywhere, it’s headline news worldwide. Rightfully so. And, for those who can afford business and first class, many airlines still give you the “Pan Am” treatment. Plus gorgeous airport lounges.

    • Thanks for sharing. I am old enough to remember breezing through a metal detector for security and not needing to show a ticket to enter the airport. Feels so foreign now.

  2. LV Property Owners: Why incur the expense of housekeeping if people aren’t dissuaded from coming?

With Marriott’s record profits, they’re not incentivized to change their evil ways, baby. Loyalty, schmoyalty.
