Australia Set to Open Borders for Vaccinated Tourists this Month

Australia will open its borders for all fully vaccinated international travelers starting in late February. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced the news on Monday after a meeting of the government’s national security committee.

The date has been set for February 21st, almost two years after borders were first closed during the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Australia’s borders have been opening up slowly since November 2021. It first eased restrictions through travel programs with New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea and Japan.

Currently, citizens, permanent residents and their families, along with international students, backpackers and migrant workers are allowed entry into Australia. But they must show proof of vaccination. Now the same rules will apply to tourists, unless they qualify for a medical exemption, CNN reports.

“The condition is you must be double vaccinated to come to Australia. That’s the rule. Everyone is expected to abide by it,” Morrison said in his announcement. He added that  that state-based caps on quarantine will continue and that those caps will still be determined by state and territory governments.

Over 2.75 million Covid-19 cases have been recorded in Australia and the total deaths stand at 4,248 since the start of pandemic.

  1. And risk being trapped (imprisoned) there because someone on the other side of the country tests positive for a sore throat……

    • No lie! I have an Australian friend who needed to get back and they locked her up for something like 10 days in quarantine. Could not even open the hotel room door or windows. Frankly I feel like they violated her human rights.

  2. It’s 2022 and we brought segregation BACK!

They said it couldn’t be done, but large central governments did it!
    Congrats to everyone!
