Aeroplan Now Lets You Book Stopovers Online

Aeroplan is the loyalty program of Air Canada, which is part of the Star Alliance. The program was completely revamped two years ago. You can read all teh details here. One of the perks of Aeroplan is that you can add a stopover for just 5,000 miles on a one-way award ticket.

A stopover is considered to be a connecting point between your origin and destination. Stopovers can be booked anywhere other than Canada or United States. They must be longer than one day and less than 45 days.

However, till now you had to call the Aeroplan contact center to book stopovers on Aeroplan redemptions. Aeroplan had already revealed that it was working to make this feature available online at aircanada.com, and as of today, it is finally live.

You can now book itineraries with stopovers online, without having to pick up the phone and call in. This is a great development as it makes it more convenient to take advantage of Aeroplan’s stopover rules.

This new option went live in the Air Canada site on September 1st in beta. It does have some limitations compared to calling in.

You’ll only be able to book itineraries with up to four flights per direction of travel online. When calling in you can have up to six. That’s probably not a deal breaker for most travelers. Another shortcoming is that it will not show every possible routing. In some rare instances you might still have to call in to book.

Conclusion

Aeroplan has made a major improvement to the booking experience by letting you book stopovers online. You no longer need to call in and talk to an agent in order to book complex itineraries.

You still need to talk to someone in some rare cases, for example when you’re booking more than four flights per direction. But for most Aeroplan enthusiasts, this is a welcomed development.

  1. […] Air Canada’s Aeroplan frequent flyer program is a favorite of many in the points and miles universe. I recently used Aeroplan points to book a short-haul flight for only 8,000 points. Aeroplan has a fair pricing model and allows some things other airlines do not. One of the favorite tricks is adding a stopover on an award ticket for an additional 5,000 points. Until now, stopover award tickets needed to be booked over the phone but Aeroplan just added the ability to book these tickets to its website. […]
