Buy an Apartment on a Cruise Ship
Lots of people love cruises. But what if you had the opportunity to live on a cruise permanently?
A new “residential community at sea” named Storylines is offering just that, with an “affordable” opportunity to live on a cruise ship. The ship is currently under construction in Croatia.
Storylines is expected to launch in 2024. It is offering fully furnished one-to-four-bedroom residences, along with studios and two-story penthouses. That’s what you would usually expect to see in a luxury condo building. But this will all be on board its upcoming ship, with prices starting at $400,000 and going as high as $8 million.
You can purchases these residences outright, but there’s also a limited number of 12 and 24-year leases. Looks like most of the 547 units have already been sold, and the residences are on track to sell out by the end of 2022, CNN reports.
The lowest price that I see for available unites is $981,097 for a 237 sq. ft. apartment.
Owners can invite guests on board, and have the option to rent out their residences when they’re not using them. You can also sell your residence just as you would with an apartment.
Owners receive an all-inclusive life at sea with a host of other impressive amenities in return. There are about 20 dining establishments and bars, a microbrewery, and three swimming pools. There’s also a 10,000-book library, a movie theater, a state-of-the art wellness center, a bowling alley and a solar powered hydroponic garden farm.
Storylines also caters to families with children, offering a full education program, as well as plenty of education spaces. There will also be a team of medical staff, including doctors, nurses and physiotherapists, on the ship, along with a pharmacy and a post office.
Those amenities come with extra costs. Aside from the purchase price, residents will be charged a “living fee.” That fee ranges from $65,000 to $200,000 per unit annually and covers expenses such as food and maintenance.
The Narrative is scheduled to begin a 1,000-day maiden voyage across six continents in late 2024. The ship will spend three to five days in each port. Residents also have opportunities to choose where the ship goes next. In addition to the scheduled stops, there’s a number of “residents choice” days.

This sort of deal may appeal to the ultra wealthy. However there are some people that could live on cruise ships for years. I undertsand this does happen. Since they can find all sorts or last minute deals and discounts, and cruise lines may also cut deals for people like that, it makes no sense to do something like this. And the extra costs can just skyrocket once they spend the money.
interesting
For $65k annually, if I was careful, I could just book cruises all year without the buy in costs. I’d also guess that as the ship ages the maintenance costs will skyrocket and be assessed to all the owners accordingly.
I agree and you have more choices. This is worse than timeshare concept.
This is not a new concept.
What are the monthly “HOA” fees on this one?
