Carnival Fantasy Rescues 23 People Who Were Afloat For Days

The Carnival Fantasy worked along side the Coast Guard to rescue 23 people stranded on a stalled boat in the Gulf of Mexico. A Coast Guard news statement issued Sunday says 22 Cubans started traveling on a wooden boat from Cuba to Mexico before losing power and drifting three days. The 23rd person on the boat was the captain who said he was taking them on his sport fishing boat from Cuba to Mexico.  That is when his engines went out and they were left adrift for 3 days before Carnival came to the rescue.

The Coast Guard was contacted on Sunday by a brother of one of the Cubans. While performing searches for the boat themselves the Coast Guard also reached out to the Carnival Fantasy. Within hours the cruise ship was able to locate and bring the 23 stranded people aboard. They were located about 130 nautical miles off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.

This comes just days after a Federal Judge warned that she may ban Carnival Corp. from docking at US ports for breaking the terms of their probation.  Cruise ships have been known to help out in the past for incidents like this and have even located other cruise ship’s overboard passengers.
