Chase Escalated Reconsideration

With Chase’s tightening over the past year or so on application approvals and the supposed expansion of the 5/24 rule, more and more of us are finding our way onto the reconsideration line to plead our case. While there are definitely cases of successful reconsideration, many people are still denied. While nothing feels worse than a denial, nothing feels better than successfully overturning one.

One Reader’s Story – A New Resolution Department

A long time reader and someone who I know personally reached out to me to share his recent story of getting an approval on a Chase Ink Plus card after being denied. He signed up for the card in-branch during Small Business Week for the 70K offer. When he applied, the app went into the standard 7-10 day processing and he decided to call reconsideration.

On the reconsideration call he was told that his application would be forwarded to “senior lenders”. Naturally he waited a few days and then called back. Unfortunately he was told that his application was denied due to a bankruptcy on his credit. While this might make sense on the surface, this reader has a Sapphire Preferred and Freedom and a good history with Chase.

Then something magical happened:

I asked if I could petition this and the agent forwarded me to the Resolution Department (Something new that I wasn’t aware of). I explained the situation and how I was disappointed. She asked for a few minutes to look at the app and finally saw that there was no reason to deny. I was approved.

So not only has this reader defied the logic that it is impossible to get a Chase card with a bankruptcy (something I have written about), but he has three of their Ultimate Rewards earning cards and more importantly he found a way to some sort of a super reconsideration department where the original decision was overturned instantly. Impressive!

Business & Personal Are Different

One thing I do want to point out is that personal card applications and business card applications are handled by different departments within Chase. It is quite possible that this Resolution Department only exists for business card applications or it has something to do with business services.

Looking at 5/24

After hearing this reader’s story, I asked him how many new cards he had opened over the past 24 months to see if the 5/24 rule would apply.  He has opened 6 personal cards including his Freedom and Sapphire Preferred within the past 24 months. So he isn’t a huge churner by any means, but he is definitely over 5/24. Yet another data point to suggest this “rule” isn’t enforced 100% of the time.

Conclusion

I have written before about my successes with getting approved via Secure Message with Chase, but I have never heard of this resolution department. I am also impressed that the reader was able to be transferred live to this department and that the person on the other end had the ability to override a senior banker’s decision. I guess the moral of the story is to keep trying and maybe, just maybe you’ll have success. Of course nothing is guaranteed.

Had you ever heard of this “Resolution Department” at Chase reconsideration? Feel free to share your experiences and data points in the comments!

  1. I am a churned]r, and in excess of the 5 card rule.

First open a business checking account and put some skin in the game.

I do have a high balance in the checking account, and was ask about why I applied for so many cards, I told them It was for the perks offered.

To date I have never been turned down.

  2. No go for me. Had applied for a United mpe and spoken to a guy who explained that it was declined due to 5/24. And today when they transferred me I speak to the same guy who remembered me. Look at the odds!

  3. I’ve been denied recently for a chase marriott card for too many applications, then I applied for the chase business marriott and got an email I was approved for that. Has anyone tried this?

    • are you over the 5/24 too? Because the Marriott is confirmed under that now. I wonder if the business marriott is flexible like the ink+

  4. Shawn I recently applied for SW business n personal Card. I was approved for personal instantly and had to cal in for business. Agent approved from his side and sent for supervisor approval too. I was later denied for too many apps, short business history etc. I called in and spoke to 3 diff agents. The last one Kina got my point bt he said he can’t approve as seniors denied. I asked who’s the last person I can talk to above supervisor and he fwd me to resolution dept. After a long chat and hold, she couldn’t approve it either. Also tried SM route and tat didn’t work either.

  5. This is fascinating. I’ve never heard of this. Just got an overturned approval yesterday for Hyatt, but not due to 5/24. Just a total credit reallocation… standard stuff.
