1st Quarter 5% Categories for Freedom Flex & Old Freedom
The Chase Freedom card has long been a great option to have in your wallet. Mark even calls it the one card everyone should get. But now we also have the Chase Freedom Flex card, which is even better. Both cards have the same rotating 5% quarterly categories, and now we know where we can earn that rate for the 1st quarter.
UPDATE 12/26: Per Doctor of Credit Chase has confirmed that online purchases will count.
1st Quarter 5% Categories
The categories for the upcoming quarter are as follows:
- Qualifying purchases made at Wholesale Clubs
(excludes online purchases), Internet, Cable, and Phone Services, Select Streaming Services. Activate by March 14, 2020. Activation is now available.
You will earn 5% back (or 5X Ultimate Rewards points) for your first $1500 in purchases from January 1 – March 31, 2021. This is a limit per card, so if you have an old Chase Freedom and the Freedom Flex, then you can earn 5% on $1,500 spend for each one.
In order to turn these points from straight cash back into actual Ultimate Rewards points you need to have one of the following Chase premium cards:
- Ink Preferred
- Sapphire Preferred
- Sapphire Reserve
- Ink Plus (no longer available)
If you have one of these cards you can combine the points from your Chase Freedom card with one of these cards. That unlocks the points and makes them transferable to travel partners or allows you to use them in the Chase Travel Portal for 25%-50% more value.
Conclusion
These are probably not the best categories, but Wholesale Clubs should be useful.
Also don’t forget about the current 4th quarter categories if you have not maximized them yet. It includes Walmart and PayPal purchases.

I can’t see Comcast or Xfinity in the list of “examples”. Strange if they are not eligible!
Wholesale Clubs excludes online purchases? I don’t see that anywhere in the terms. Costco is specifically listed as only taking Mastercard online.
