Chase Freedom Wholesale Clubs 2016
Chase hasn’t exactly been forthcoming with the quarterly bonus categories on their Freedom card for this year. As of now the following incomplete calendar is available on their site:
Today though they announced (covered first on Frequent Miler) the following expansion of their bonus categories for the rest of the year:
With the Costco credit card acceptance changing to Visa on June 20, including those issued by Chase, Chase Freedom is announcing that it will continue to offer the 5% cash back category of Wholesale Clubs through the end of the year. Chase Freedom cardholders earn 5% cash back each quarter on up to $1,500 in combined purchases from Wholesale Clubs, including Costco®, BJ’s® and Sam’s Club®, and other additional rotating quarterly categories.
What This Means
To be clear, Chase is simply adding Wholesale Clubs to their 3rd quarter and 4th quarter bonus categories. (It is already a category for the 2nd quarter.) This means 5X earnings at Wholesale Clubs are subject to the normal $1,500 per quarter restriction. With this news, here are what we can look forward to for the rest of the year:
- Quarter 3: Restaurants and Wholesale Clubs. (Possibly more to be announced.)
- Quarter 4: Online shopping and Wholesale Clubs. (Possibly more to be announced and we need clarification on exactly what falls under online.)
Why This Is Good
It can be hard to max out a category like restaurants, especially given the prevalence of discounted gift cards and other factors. Some people even have multiple Freedom cards which makes it more difficult. Given that a lot of Wholesale Clubs have fairly desirable gift cards (Visa, MC & others), this is a positive move, especially considering Costco is in the mix as well.
Conclusion
This isn’t a huge move, but it should make it quite a bit easier to max out the category bonuses for your Freedom card(s) the rest of the year. Since we have five Freedom cards in my household, this is a welcome change and one that will encourage me to visit my local Costco a bit more often.

Is the $1500 limit to be no used good PER quarter or in total for the year insofar as Costco goes?
It is per quarter, however Costco or other clubs are lumped in with other 5% categories. Each quarter the 5% categories get a $1,500 spending limit.
