The 5/24 Rule
Chase seems to be enforcing their 5/24 rule for the Chase Sapphire Reserve card. This means that you are likely to get denied if you have opened up 5 or more revolving accounts in the past 24 months across all banks. I covered how Chase is treating 5/24 with the Sapphire Reserve application link in a separate post, but it isn’t looking good. If you are over 5/24 it may pay to go into a branch to see if you are preapproved for the card. Some people have had success getting approvals that way.

If I could apply, I would use your link, but I am over 5/24. I think I want to try to convert from CSP to CSR for the 1.5 cents per point. I have a good credit limit on my current card so I am hoping it will work out. I have Priority Pass with Prestige which allows my spouse to visit for free. The 3x on travel and dining is good and the $600 will cover the fee +$150, so it is a good option for me and maybe others. I have been booking hotels in Europe lately through the UR portal so I hope to save there if possible. I am getting good at earning points lately with your help. Thanks
If you are using the UR portal already then this could make a lot of sense, especially given the increased earnings and only slightly higher cost once you factor in the travel credit. If you don’t see yourself as getting under 5/24 and don’t think you will get preapproved or don’t want the hassle then a conversion is definitely a worthy consideration. In your case it does seem like the value is there.
i went to the bank yesterday and asked for a banker to check if i am pre-approved for any cards. He showed me that i am pre-approved for most chase cards which i didn’t have!
pulled the trigger and got approved with a 31k line.
credit score ~790
i am at 12/24
Congrats!

Hi, where can I find accurate info about my 5/24? Annual credit report & credit karma I assume. Any other reliable source? I counted myself either 5 or 6 over 24, this card really had us worked up, I need some hotline blink
Credit Karma can help, but the best way is to check your credit report to be sure.
To my knowledge, Credit Karma supplies reports from only two of the bureaus. So here’s what you do: Go to CreditCheckTotal.com and pay $1 for a 7-day trial membership. They’ll give you reports from all three bureaus. As soon as they deliver the goods, give them a call and cancel.
Forgot to mention… with that $1 trial membership, you’ll also get your three FICO scores. 🙂
Good advice. There are other services too and everyone should also remember that you get one free credit report per year directly from the bureaus via annualcreditreport.com
Shawn, I think you are regretting why you didn’t apply for your wife last week.
Haha definitely!

People should think long and hard before jumping to get this card. Having to spend $4,000 in 90 days is going to be a stretch for most. I wonder how many will get themselves into debt just to have this card. And then the $450 annual fee. Yikes! No thanks, I’ll stick with my B of A Travel Rewards card.
I think a lot of readers of this site are able to meet the spend, but you are absolutely correct. You should never get into debt to meet spend on a credit card and should never pay interest. With that said, this card has a $2,000+ first year value which makes it a good deal for some people.
Everyone should stay within their comfort zone, think about their goals and current situation and make the decision that is best for themselves. Thanks for the reminder of that.
If this was an AMEX then it may pose a slight issue but most bills can be paid with VISA/MC. I was also going for this because my annual fee for Prestige and Premier are coming due and this would be a really good alternative.
Not to mention, we still have ways to manufacture our spending and meet the minimum spend. There’s no way I would be able to meet the CSR’s minimum through conventional spending. Thankfully, I can buy VGC’s and use them to either load my Serve account or to buy MO’s.
Applied in branch today, not pre-approved. Well over 5/24 but went pending with the 7 – 10 message. Is general consensus not to call recon on this one?
Everyone who has called has seemingly been denied. I would personally wait it out, although if the data hold true, it probably doesn’t matter.
I spent a lot of time last night cancelling the AU cards for me and hubby on several of our cards. Trying to help this chase situation plus trying to shed this stack of credit cards. From the results here, it may not help. We are both over 5/24.
@Kathy (1) have them removed from your credit report. This may take a month or two. (2) Apply and call recon tell them that they are not your accounts, you have never used them, and you were not aware that you were on them. I think that they may have some flexibility if you outright lie about not using the AU accounts. Total BS.
Approved and well over 5/24. Not sure I need a $35,000 line. Sheesh. Are we sure the 100K points are confirmed?
My husband was approved right away. Went into his Chase account and it showed the account in there already. I then sent a message through the link asking about the 100,000 bonus points and if they could expedite the card. They confirmed the 100,000 points with $4000 spend in 3 months but were unable to expedite the card.
Thanks for the data point on the bonus. I always recommend people send a secure message to confirm the bonus after approval. It never hurts to have that confirmation in writing, even if you apply through a landing page.
Just applied at a branch and got approved… guess the 5/24 did not come into play as I truly thought I would not be approved.. My wife on the other hand, applied online and got a ” we need longer to review” … will let you know 7-10 days….
Did they mention if you were pre-approved?
Me too. Applied but pending approval. Would you recommend I call now or wait for them to contact me?
Most/all who seem to call have been getting denied. Personally I would wait, but I know that can be hard to do.
Called recon line…took 25 minutes to get to a live agent. Denied for too many cards. I’m disappointed because we are 20-year Chase customers — personal accounts, business accounts, mortgage, referred a couple customers to them…EXCELLENT credit. But the computer stats win over any of that. I would have loved to replace my regular Sapphire card with this one and dump by Citi Prestige. Oh well, this is new reality in credit.
[…] Miles to Memories – 2 people over 5/24 – 2 declines. […]
5/24 is an effect. I can confirm. I was just denied. I’m at 4/24 (my accounts). My wife put me on two of her accounts as an AU. they refused to no count the AU accounts.
Tip: If you call recon with my same situation tell them that you have never used the account and did not consent to being on the account. If they seemed open to this, but still refused (because I admitted to using the card 6 months ago – I am not going to lie).
This really makes me mad. I am not a churner and a loyal Chase customer.
Counting AU is beyond stupid….especially since they give out bonus points to sign people up for them! Seems like a double standard.
Approved! Though well below 5/24.
Just signed up my husband. I usually alternate us when signing up for cards. Not big churners like most of you guys. He was at 2/24 and I am also at 2/24. We are AU on each others accounts. I did sign myself up as AU on this account as well, Did not want to pay the extra $75 but we both need cards to use for our daily expenses to meet the $4000 in 3 months. Credit score is 830.
Forgot to add that he was instantly approved with $34,000 credit line.
Nice credit line. Congratulations!
Do two Ink Plus business cards apply to 5/24?
I’ve been looking for the answer to that for about two weeks. No luck so far.
I have heard mixed reports, but at least some people have said Chase Ink cards are internally considered for 5/24 even though they aren’t on your credit report. Basically, I can’t say for sure, but for at least some people that seems to be the case.
Applied online. Pending review.
Applied online at what I thought was 8/24. Got “we need to review” message, called recon and was declined for 9/24! Apparently, heloc counts against you as well! 🙁
What’s the number to call and check on status? Just the basic Chase number?
The application status number is 888-338-2586 I believe.
Well over 5/24. Pending.
Good luck my friend! 🙂
