Citi Black Friday Deal: Redeem for Gift Cards at 15% Off

Citi has announced a Black Friday for a 15% discount on points redemptions for gift cards. From the email sent to Citi cardholders, it seems there will be more brands included.

The full list is not available yet, but here are the brands we know so far:

  • Apple
  • Applebee’s
  • Barnes & Noble
  • Fanatics
  • IHOP
  • Spafinder

The email made it sound like Best Buy might be included, but we aren’t sure at this point.

Normally, redeeming Citi ThankYou Points isn’t the most valuable use of your points. These redemptions typically occur at a fixed rate of 1 cent each. However, with a 15% discount, you may consider a value of 1.15 cents worth it. Be sure to do the math to see what value you are getting before confirming payment.

Another angle is that a 15% discount could make these gift cards worth buying and then reselling. As always, check the market, be sure you have a liquidation strategy, and don’t buy more than you can afford to float if you have to hold these for a while when trying to resell.
