Citi Executive AAdvantage 3x Offer
Citi is sending out a targeted offer to holders of their AAdvantage Executive card offering 3x AAdvtantage miles on purchases at department stores, restaurants, gas stations and grocery stores through 6/30/2015. Lets take a look at the terms and a few possible ways to maximize your earnings.
Key Terms
This offer starts upon enrollment and will end on 06/30/2015. AAdvantage® miles are only earned on eligible purchases. Earnings associated with this program will equal 2 AAdvantage® bonus mile(s) per $1 spent on eligible purchases and may overlap with other special offers in which you are currently enrolled. AAdvantage® miles earned with this offer are subject to a maximum of 2,500 AAdvantage® bonus miles.
How to Maximize
As you can see, the promotion is capped at 2,500 bonus miles or $1,250 in eligible spending. One approach would be to purchase $500 gift cards at a local grocery stores for $5.95 each. The way I see it there are two main options with this approach:
- Purchase 3 x $500 cards for $17.85 in fees and earn 4,018 AAdvantage miles for a cost of about $.0044 per point. (Good deal!)
- Purchase 2 x $500 cards for $11.90 in fees and earn 3,036 AAdvantage miles for a cost of about $.0039 per point. (Better deal, but less miles.)
REDbird
Finally, if your local Target is coded as a grocery store by Visa, you could load $1,250 to your REDbird and earn 3,750 AAdvantage miles with no cost. I know this will be an exciting option for some.
Retention Offers
Since this promotion can overlap with other offers, one thought would be to call Citi’s retention department to see what they can offer you. One regular offer they give out is 1,000 bonus miles after $1,000 in spend per month for 16 months. If you got that offer, then you could theoretically earn an additional 1,000 miles without much effort.
Conclusion
This promotion is targeted and thus far I have only received it on one of the five Citi AAdvantage Executive cards my wife and I have. Hopefully it is being sent out in waves, because I see this as a nice opportunity to pick up a few AAdvantage miles for a relatively cheap price.

[…] earn either 5x or 5% cashback at grocery stores. With that said, this would work great with the AAdvantage 3x offer I wrote about this morning and even a 2% cashback card will come out […]
You might be correct about the offer coming in waves. I just received the offer email a couple minutes ago.
I’m conflicted about whether or not to call in and get the extra 1000 miles per month for 16 months. I’m not sure if I want to have that offer on my account when I go to make my annual fee/cancellation call or not. But I’m thinking I might as well, as I kind of doubt there’s going to be any retention offer available at my annual fee time that would persuade me to not downgrade to a no-fee Citi card. I cannot imagine that excepting the 16-month retention offer now would carry over to the downgraded non-fee card, and lock me out of getting retention offers on that card for 16 months? Any risk of that would make going after an extra 1000 points definitely not worth it.
