Citi Launching New No-Fee American Airlines Credit Card

Citi Launching New No-Fee American Airlines Credit Card

Citi and AA sent out emails announcing the launch of the Citi AAdvantage MileUp card, a new no-annual-fee credit card coming July 22. This will be replacing the inferior Citi / AAdvantage Bronze card which earns 1 mile for every $2 in spend. Earlier today we reported some positive changes to a few other Citi AAdvantage Cards. Let’s take a look at the offer and the card’s details.

Analysis

The new AAdvantage MileUp card is far superior to it’s predecessor the AAdvanatge Bronze Card. It’s always nice to see airline cards with no annual fees and even better when benefits and earnings are added at no extra cost to the card member. The sign up bonus is pretty generous as far as no fee cards go. 10,000 AA miles is worth around $150 and the $50 statement credit easily makes the value around $200. Not too shabby for only $500 in required spend.

Cardmembers who currently have the Citi / AAdvantage Bronze card will also begin earning 2 AAdvantage miles for every $1 spent on eligible American Airlines purchases and at grocery stores, along with 1 mile for every $1 spent on all other purchases made on or after July 22. They will receive the new AAdvantage MileUpSM card when their current Citi / AAdvantage Bronze card expires.

What do you think? Is the Citi AAdvantage MileUp card worth getting excited about?

  1. What – no love for grandfathered Citi Gold cardholders like me? Can I downgrade to a no fee Bronze card?

The only reason I haven’t cancelled this card is that it is one of my oldest and has a huge credit line. But I see no reason to pay the $50 AF anymore, particularly as I have a Barclay’s card.
