Citi Underpaid ThankYou Premier Card Holders

PDX Deals Guy alerted us that Citi has been sending out emails to ThankYou Premier card holders who had the card anytime between November 15, 2015 to July 21, 2017.  They are informing cardholders that they had been paying out 1 ThankYou point per dollar at convenience stores instead of the 3 points per dollar they should have.

Details on the Email

The email is titled Update To Points Earned With Citi ThankYou Premier Card. In the body they go one to say that they should have been paying out 3x TY points all along but people were only being awarded 1 TY point per dollar.  They credited the difference on people’s October 2017 statement.

PDX Deals Guy had already downgraded his card to a Citi Dividend card so he recieved a statement credit at one cent per point. This was instead of the expected ThankYou points being added to his balance.  It is unknown if they are issuing ThankYou points to people who still have the Premier card or statement credits to everyone.  Let us know in the comments how they issued you your correction.

Convenience stores are not explicitly listed in the terms but the terms may have been updated since this discovery.  Although with some banks, like Chase, certain convenience stores fall into the gas category.  I know 7-11 stores around me produce this result.

Conclusion

It is good that Citi caught the error and that they are making people whole. But, I am surprised it took so long.  I am sure this produced a nice windfall for some.  I also wonder how they are dealing with people that closed their accounts without a downgrade.  Do they just lose out?

Let us know in the comments if you received the email. Also let us know if you received a statement credit or ThankYou points as your refund.  See if you can beat PDX’s $1.29 windfall :)!

  1. […] Are You Owed ThankYou Points?:  Emails have been sent out to Premier cardholders that were affected, so please check your inbox.  Apparently customers were only getting 1 ThankYou point per dollar at convenience stores when they should’ve been getting 3 points per dollar.  If you held this card between the dates specified in the article, be sure to check if you’re owed points.
