Delta Platinum Amex 60k Targeted Offer

I am definitely not a huge fan of the Delta Skymiles program, however one area they excel over the other carriers is the ability to earns MQMs through credit card spend. You can even manufacture elite status through credit card spend.

The Delta Amex Platinum card comes with a $195 fee that is not waived the first year, but it gives the ability to earn 10,000 MQMs after $25k in spend and an additional 10,000 MQMs after $50k in spend. The problem is the sign-up bonus on this card is generally not very good. Historically the public bonus has been 30,000 miles, but right now it is only 10,000 miles.

One of my readers sent me the details of a targeted offer that is going around. I am sharing this for two reasons. First, it is a good idea to check your email to see if you have received it and second it is always good to be informed of what offers are out there even if you aren’t targeted.

Here are the details of the offer he received:

Analysis

Last year we saw a public offer giving 50,000 bonus miles, a statement credit and 15,000 MQMs. This deal has 10,000 more bonus miles, but 10,000 less MQMs. It is definitely still a great deal for someone looking for this card, but I still prefer Membership Rewards earning cards. Waiting for an offer with more MQMs may be something to consider as well.

Conclusion

If you are someone who lives in a Delta market or are looking for this card, this offer may be worth a look if you are targeted. If you are not, I wouldn’t be surprised to see that 50k offer come back at some point.

  1. Hi Shawn. I’m sitting on 30K Delta pesos from long ago — haven’t yet been able to find a use for them flying from CHO or RIC. (award availability still miserly with Delta) Yet you, like most travel bloggers throw around the “MQM” term like everyone knew what it meant. Well, I have no idea…. (and my son who works at an airport has no idea — nor do any of his buddies who work for Delta) So next time, before you have a post with that term tossed around sooooo knowingly, would you be kind enough (say like Daraius style) to ‘splain it to we mere mortals what an MQM is, why it is or is not a big deal. Thanks in advance. (ps, I have from time to time, when I have time to waste, tried to figure this out on the Delta web site — but the eyes glaze over when they start yammering on about MQM, MQS, MQD, whatever….. Are these all just fancier ways to say worthless gibberish?

    • MQM (Medallion Qualifying Miles) the miles you need to physically fly (or that you can get on Credit Cards) for status with that Airline. You do not redeem them to get free flights, it is purely for status. 25,000 MQM is Silver; 50,000 is Gold; 75,000 for Platinum; 125,000 for Diamond.

MQS (Medallion Qualifying Segments) Instead of flying 25,000 miles with Delta to get Silver status, you could take 30 flights (a round trip counts as two) to receive Silver status. 60 segments for Gold; 100 for Platinum; 140 for Diamond.

Finally MQD (Mediallion Qualifying Dollar) amount of money you spend with Delta for flights. The above two examples, MQM and MQS, you can do either to earn status but regardless of that, you NEED to spend a certain dollar amount with the airline to get that status. For Delta it’s $3,000 for Silver; $6,000 for Gold; $9000 for Platinum; $15,000 for Diamond. The only workaround is when you have a Delta Amex credit card, you can spend $25,000 on that card in the year, to waive the MQD and then you only need either the MQM or MQS amount to get status.

      Hopefully that helps.
