Grand Hyatt Kauai Closes Down Due to Quarantine Requirements
Hawaii opened up to out of state visitors in October. But the reopening has already had a setback as Kauai has opted out of the state’s pre-travel testing program for visitors.
After the announcement that Kauai will keep its quarantine requirements on place, the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa said it is closing its doors next week. The resort said it will remain closed through the end of the year and it is not clear when it will reopen. No date has been set as of now, and most likely it will depend on the restrictions placed by the local Kauai government.
In a statement, the resort said it will be “temporarily suspending operations … due to new county travel restrictions requiring a 14-day mandatory quarantine for incoming residents and visitors.”
Another option could have been the “resort bubble” program, but Grand Hyatt Kauai said that it will not take part in it. Grand Hyatt is Kauai’s largest private employer.
Kauai County has a total of 120 cases so far and just 1 death. But about half of those cases have come in recent weeks. The extreme measures are required because Kauai has the fewest ICU beds in the state, just nine total. COVID-19 hospitalizations could cause serious problems at local hospitals.
