American Express Honoring Hilton Aspire No Fee Upgrade Offer

Recently, American Express was offering an incredible offer for the Hilton Aspire card. Some cardmembers were invited to upgrade to the $450 fee Hilton card and get a 150,000 Hilton points bonus. However, the fee would also be waived the first year based on the terms of the offer.

It seemed to good to be true, but it was still a unique opportunity to get all the benefits the card provides, and the option to possibly save $450. Even if it didn’t work out, you would still have the 100K bonus.

At first, letters were sent out stating that the annual fee will be prorated starting January 30th, 2021. So it looked like American Express was backing out of the offer. But now there’s some good news for those who applied. Doctor of Credit reports that Amex reps are saying that the offer will actually be honored. No annual fee will be charged for the first year, just as the offer stated. If you signed up for this Amex Hilton Aspire upgrade offer, then it should be a good idea to contact Amex directly and get some kind of confirmation in writing that you will not the charged the annual fee.

Conclusion

This is similar to the other that we saw back in late 2019 when many readers were able to get the Hilton Aspire card with no fee. But this was an upgrade offer, which made it even better since you could take advantage of it even if you had the card in the past.

Let us know if you upgraded to the Hilton Aspire card through this offer and if you have received any confirmation from Amex about waiving the annual fee.

  1. I just tried via chat and was told that it was an error, and there will be no waiver of the AF in the first year. After I told them I had screenshots of the terms, they had me upload to the document center for review…

    • question regarding uploading something to the document center. did you have to open a case/dispute in order to obtain a reference #, which i believe is required to upload something to the document center?

    • The first year free upgrade offer did not include any bonus points. Not 150,000 like you say in the 1st paragraph. Not 100,000 like you say in the second paragraph. Doctor of Credit had it wrong and you are repeating the incorrect information.

Amex has certainly made this confusing by publishing one thing in the T&C, then sending a letter that the offer would not be honored, and then telling members something different when they call.

  2. I, along with several family members, had the $0AF Hilton Honors CC. We were all targeted for the $0AF Aspire upgrade offer and all of us jumped on it in December. We all did the upgrade on the same day, and we should all have the same terms & conditions. Also, none of us had any points bonus with our offers. It was just the opportunity to upgrade to the Aspire with the first year free, along with confusing language regarding a $95 prorated fee, then the $450AF.

I spoke to Amex yesterday and they assured me I wouldn’t be charged an AF in 2021, and that 2022 would be the first time I would be charged one. However, my spouse tried calling and was told the opposite. Apparently, she will be charged the $450AF on or around Feb 1, 2021. There is no consistency, and none of this makes any sense. I always thought Amex had a reputation for exceptional customer service, but I really wish they would train their reps better for one-off situations like this…
