An Awesome Gift I Found While Booking a Hilton Hotel Just Now!

Hilton Hotel Credit Social Media

I am going to be in San Francisco soon and needed a room for one night in the city. After looking through the various options, I found a great rate at the Hilton in Union Square. Since I now have Diamond status through their previous match, I figured why not and booked the hotel.

After booking, I was surprised to find the following message pop-in.

So as you can see I clicked the “Tweet on Twitter” option and sent out a tweet. (Using a secondary Twitter account that I have for Amex Offers.) A few moments later I received an email with my $15 certificate for use at the property!

And while that “View terms” language stands out at the bottom, the actual terms of the certificate aren’t bad. Very few strings attached.

To redeem this offer, please present this certificate to the Front Desk at check-in. Offer is valid for stays at participating properties in the Hilton portfolio. A folio credit of up to US$15 or currency equivalent will be awarded. Folio credit will be applied toward food and beverage charges at eligible hotel outlets only and excludes room rate, corresponding taxes, gratuity and select activities as determined by property. Folio credits are not transferable, not redeemable for cash, are void after checkout and cannot be applied toward future stays.

The other neat thing for your friends/family is they get a discount and bonus points if they use that link to book.  You’ll see below why that isn’t a great deal now, but it is something that could be useful in the future.

I have never seen this with Hilton or with anyone else to be honest. I wonder if this $15 perk is limited to just this hotel or if it is something new they are rolling out.

One More Thing

Seconds after booking my stay on their site impulsively, I remembered that I can earn 5,000 bonus points by going through their app to book. That is definitely a better deal than the 5% cashback ($6) I will earn through a portal. Still, I am intrigued by this credit and this program. Has anyone else seen this before?

  1. I’ve found the Hilton in the Financial District to be a bit better as a Diamond member than Union Square. They have massage chairs. Neither are great though. I love the Grand Hyatt in Union Square.

    • I have stayed at the Hilton in the Financial District and found it decent enough, but the location isn’t quite as good. The main reason to stay at the Union Square location is the crazy low price for the night I am there. I definitely prefer Hyatt, but the Hilton is almost 1/3 of the price.

  2. A company named Flip.To provides this messaging for hotels. Many hotels offer this when booking direct. Georgetown Suites in Washington, DC is a great example.

  3. Sounds like a good word-of-mouth promo for Hilton (and a nice free meal for you), but be aware that you are broadcasting your travel plans to the Internet. Take extra care that your home doesn’t get robbed while you are away (or anything to that effect).

  4. The Hilton Hawaiian Village has been doing it for at least a year for a free Blue Hawaii or $15. The check in staff seem to know you can only apply one social media voucher per stay.

    • Interesting. I figured it was probably property specific. I am sure people tried to game that system by creating multiple bookings. Makes sense that the front desk would catch on quickly!
