Is Hyatt Trying to be the New Airbnb? Oasis Program Announced

Hyatt Announces New Oasis Program

Hyatt announces a new program called Oasis, a home share program, that is a part of their Unbound Collection.  It looks like they are looking to compete with the Airbnb and VRBO types of the world.  They claim Oasis combines the comfort and authenticity of home rentals with the service and amenities of a hotel – including in-person check-in and check-out, fresh linens and toiletries, and on-demand concierge services.

Details on the Program

Here are some details on the program:

  • The program currently has 22 participating cities.
  • Point earning/redeeming is not currently set up for the program but should be available soon.
  • $150 cleaning fee for every stay.
  • Save $100 on your first stay with Oasis when you book by Oct 31 using offer code: UnboundxHyatt.

Conclusion

This seems like a strange move for Hyatt.  Hyatt seems a little desperate since announcing the “rebranding” dud that is World Of Hyatt. It looks like they are going for the luxury home-share customer…if there is such a thing.

After doing some poking around I noticed that most properties are instituting a minimum stay requirement.  The $150 cleaning makes it tough for short/3 day weekend trips anyways.  I realize they are trying to go after the Airbnb client but I feel like this could cannibalize some of their hotel business as well.  From what I could see taxes are not being charged which could make a difference in tax heavy cities.

It will be interesting to see how they price out the apartments for award stays.  There could be some sweet spot redemptions available.  I wonder if the cleaning fee will be included in award stays or will it be treated like a “resort fee”?

Let us know what you think of this move by Hyatt in the comments.  Do you think this is a good move?

  1. Oasis was actually in existence before this agreement and Hyatt made the move back in August. That would seem to indicate that the move had been in the works for a while now. It is just now that they are bringing it online.

  2. “I wonder if the cleaning fee will be included in award stays or will it be treated like a “resort fee”?”

Hyatt doesn’t charge resort fees on award stays under World of Hyatt, so it would be great if the cleaning fee were treated like a resort fee.

    • That is true! I meant it more in the traditional sense of resort fees. But I do hope the cleaning fee is waived on award stays.
