Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach Announced
I love Hawaii and I love Hyatt, so naturally when my two loves converge it piques my interest. I have stayed at our visited all of the Hyatt Hawaiian hotels. Among them are:
- Grand Hyatt Kauai – Among my favorite hotels in the world!
- Hyatt Regency Maui – An awesome family hotel.
- Andaz Maui – A beautiful hotel.
- Hyatt Place Waikiki – A very functional hotel and a great award value.
- Hyatt Regency Waikiki – We toured the property but didn’t stay. It is a bit dated, but nice.
Now, Hyatt will be adding a sixth Hawaiian property (not including their timeshare) and a third near Waikiki. While I haven’t seen a press release about it, yesterday I stumbled across an article talking about the new Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach Hotel which will be opening this winter. According to the article, “The hotel will have 230 rooms and suites, an outdoor swimming pool and entertainment deck, a bar and restaurant, and a fitness facility.”
The Hyatt Centric Waikiki Beach will be located in the former Waikiki Trade Center which began renovations in September, 2015. In addition to the hotel, there will be a two story Nordstrom Rack, a Starbucks and a Jamba Juice.
Location & Thoughts
I looked at Google Maps to find where this hotel will be located since it isn’t listed on Hyatt’s website. According to what I could find, this is the location. (Highlighted in the upper middle.) I have also highlighted the Royal Hawaiian hotel on the bottom left and the existing Hyatt Regency on the bottom right.
The hotel is a couple of blocks from the beach on what I would consider the more desirable side of Waikiki. I think that other than a location right on the beach, this is a very good place for a hotel. There are a ton of dining and shopping options within a short walk and the beach isn’t far away either.
Conclusion
I am not sure why Hyatt hasn’t officially announced this hotel (which means we have no idea what award category it will be), but I am excited that the Hyatt Centric brand is making its way to Hawaii. I have yet to stay in a Hyatt Centric, but given the other two Hyatt options near Waikiki, I definitely would be willing to give this hotel a shot depending on how it is priced of course!

We stayed at the Hyatt Regency in January. Most of it was already renovated, but they were still working on it. It should be done by now.
The Hyatt is basically going to be sitting on Duke street market vendors. The place was a real gem before Hyatt too land and made them scale back. A lot of the long time vendors are gone having lost their prime spots to “progress”. I find Duke street vendors can be bargained with and you can get some great value — at least I have and repeatedly — unlike at the Hula Bowl where things are fairly pricey compared to Duke street but has a vastly larger variety and is more commercial than Duke Street is — though with Hyatt moving in I have seen the more upscale changes of these open air vendors which can only mean one thing: higher prices for stuff.
It will be interesting to see what eventually happens with the Hyatt right next to the Duke Street vendors. That is the place you need to go for souveniers and t shirts and jewelry.
I am more sad that Hyatt has altered the dynamic of Duke Street and the culture of Waikiki making it more “corporate” than I am excited that they have arrived. Waikiki is already in nosebleed territory and it will only be getting pricier. I say this having been there 7 times in less than 2 years and seeing the changes happen so quickly and not necessarily for the better. Waikiki beach is beyond crowded already.
Which hotel ( I have points for all the major ones) is my best best for a couple nights will have 4 older kids with me ages 17-24?
Tough call. The Hyatt Regency Maui is nice since it is located on a Boardwalk with a lot of nice restaurants/bars. For pure beauty the Andaz is hard to beat. The best overall resort I think is the GH Kauai, but it is more isolated and there is less to do on Kauai.
Don’t forget about this “sort of” Hyatt property to eventually come on the market on late 2017?

Yes, this project looks interesting and I could see splitting my time between this area and the Grand Hyatt.
