Hyatt Family Rate Guide

If the size of a hotel room is too small for your needs, it is usually necessary to get a second room. This can be a major hassle in Europe, as most rooms can only fit 2 people. But, there is a trick at select Hyatt Properties where you can get a second room for up to 50% off. In this Hyatt Family Rate guide, I’ll discuss how it is possible to book a second room for 50% off.

Some of the information in this blog post was sent to me from the Hyatt Public Relations (PR) department. But, I verified this information, and they had no influence over this blog post.

What Hotels Offer This Rate?

This is the biggest drawback of the rate. Unfortunately, there is not one hotel participating in this program that is in the US. But, even though that is the case, it still can save a lot of money internationally, especially in Europe because of the small room sizes. It is still worth reaching out to the hotel directly even if not on the list and see if they will work with you. This is what Mark recently did on his trip to Chicago.

How Can I Book This Rate?

It is quite easy to book this rate. Unfortunately, it is not possible to book this rate online, as there is an issue with the website. When you book on the site, it says “adults per room”; the same is true about the number of kids. For example, if there were 2 adults and 3 kids, the site will only let you choose 2 adults and 3 kids per room, or 4 adults and 6 kids total. Thus, only customer service agents can book this rate.

But once you call, it is pretty easy. Every agent I have spoken to thus far seems knowledgeable, which surprised me as it is an under-the-radar rate.

What is the Cost of the Second Room?

The cost is supposed to be the flexible rate of the first room, and 50% off that rate for the second room. When I contacted Hyatt, I heard mixed things. Hyatt Concierge on Twitter told me that it is up to 50% off, so it depends on the hotel, while the Hyatt PR contact that I have told me that it is 50% off.

Hyatt Family Rate Guide – Who Can Stay in the Second Room?

The policy of the family rate is that the first room is for adults, and the second room is for kids. But, if you were to have one parent in each room and one kid, it wouldn’t be a big deal since no one would know.

Can You Earn Points and Elite Night Credits on the Second Room?

It is possible to earn points on up to three rooms, though it is not possible to earn elite night credits on all of the rooms. For example, if you are not a Hyatt elite member, and you spent $300 on room charges for both rooms for two nights, you would still earn 1,500 points, but you would only earn two elite night credits, and not four.

Is This Different Than Guest of Honor

Yes, this is different. With Guest of Honor, you can book a room using points, and then book another room for someone else also using points. But, with the Family Rate, you still have to pay 50% out of pocket.

But, the main difference comes with elite benefits. You will not have elite night benefits on the second room, but you will on the first room. So what that means is that you can bring your spouse or friend to breakfast, but since your kids are in the second room, they won’t get free breakfast. This is because they are not registered in the same room.

This is a great example of how a Club Lounge Access award can come in handy, even as a Globalist. If you were staying at the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile, which has a club lounge, your spouse or friend would be able to get club lounge access as they are a globalist, but your kids would get access by using a club lounge access award.

Can You Use Points on the First Room and Pay With Cash on the Second Room?

Yes, you can. I confirmed with Hyatt that it is possible to book the first room for 50% off, and then book the second room for 50% off the flexible rate. For example, if you wanted two rooms at the Hyatt Centric the Liberties in Dublin, which is a category 3, and the cash rate is $200, you would be able to book two rooms for either 9,000, 12,000, or 15,000, depending on the day, plus $100 for the second room.

Hyatt Family Rate – Final Thoughts

Overall, this is an awesome rate. While I personally don’t see getting much use out of this, I think there are some people with large families that could find this rate to be particularly helpful. Plus, it is super helpful in Europe, where most rooms can fit only 2 people.

  1. Not true about the program NOT applying in the US. I’ve used it for stays at the Grand Hyatt Washington DC and Hyatt Regency Seattle this year.

    • As I mentioned in the third paragraph, only European and Asian hotels officially participate in the program. But, there’s no harm in asking other hotels if they participate in the program. Thanks for reading.
