IHG Extending Free Night Certificates

IHG Extending Free Night Certificates

With everyone canceling travel plans, using Free Night Certificates within the expiration date becomes pretty difficult. IHG at least is making some customer friendly changes.

The hotel chain is extending the expiration date on Free Night Certificates for some members by six months, but with a small catch. You will need to call in and ask for the extension. This will not be done automatically, at least for now.

Yes this is a positive move from IHG, but they should just go ahead and extend all certificates like Hilton did recently. And six month might not be enough either for certificates that expire soon.

Let us know if you are affected by this, and if you have success calling in.

  1. I hope they will also extend status as well. I finally became Aspire and wont have a chance to enjoy it. I hope Delta also follows suit with my Delta Platinum status and companion certificates. Im assuming all hotel & airlines will at some point extend everyone in order to kick start people traveling and brand loyalty when the time comes.

  2. I did a chat with IHG a few weeks ago, mine was set to expire today. They said they’d get back to me and gave me a reference number. Took about a week, but they did get back and pushed it out 6 months. Is there any news on Marriott nights? I have one coming due in May.

  3. No go for me! I have 2 expiring on 23 June 2020 & 15 Oct 2020. I was told yes we are extending, I was then put on hold for 10 mins waiting for managers approval. Rep came back and said sorry we are only extending near expiring certificates. He said they noted my account and for me to call back 1-2 weeks before it expires.

  4. I sent ’em an email. Will try to report back as to how it goes.

While this is certainly a nice thing for IHG to do, it would be a lot nicer and would look a lot better on IHG if they would just extend ’em all automatically.

  5. Just called after I read your note. I told them I wouldn’t be able to use it as I am not traveling now (because of the virus). I asked if they were considering extending the expiration date and she said, “Actually, we are!” (mine expires early June) She verified my account and extended it about 4 months, until Sep 30, 2020.

  6. I have a points on Hyatt that would give me a free room. The problem is they were going to expire May 31st. Thus far Hyatt has only said they will extend all current expiration of points until May 31st which won’t do anything for me as that was their normal expiration. I hope they extend 6 months so that members can have ample time to use them.
