IHG PointBreaks Dead
Pour one out for one of the old school loyalty promotions. IHG PointBreaks has been a quarterly promotion going back as far as I can remember. In the old days they would offer a wide variety of hotels for 5K points each night. The list of eligible hotels would change each quarter. Over the years less & less desirable hotels found their way on the list and eventually PointBreaks was expanded to 3 pricing tiers with hotels costing 5-15K points per night. In other words, it has slowly devalued along the way, but now PointBreaks may be dead at last.
No New PointBreaks (Possibly Forever)
Today was supposed to be the day that the new list of PointBreaks hotels was released, however no announcement came. Loyalty Lobby was able to get a statement from IHG about the future of PointBreaks:
We do not have a new IHG Rewards Club PointBreaks promotion planned currently. However, our guests can take advantage of our current offers, City Lights (advisory attached) and the IHG Rewards Club Premier Credit Card promotion. We look forward to sharing more details on other promotions in the coming weeks.
While this statement doesn’t say IHG PointBreaks is dead for good, it does seem to indicate that it won’t be coming back for this go around. Let’s hope they change their mind, but for now IHG PointBreaks does seem to be dead.
IHG PointBreaks Dead – Bottom Line
One of the better uses (okay the best use) of IHG Rewards Club points for many years has been PointBreaks. While it became less and less valuable as a promotion over the years due to changes, I still occasionally found great benefit out of PointBreaks and I know many of you did too.
Now that IHG PointBreaks is apparently paused or dead, what will you spend you IHG Rewards Club points on? Let us know in the comments!

Well said by all of you that HAVE HAD L O Y A L T Y to IHG.
We all make choices. IHG is a business first and foremost. The loyalty rewards and offerings were a business ploy to try to get even more business for their profit.
I personally like companies who are actually attracting more loyal customers (which at one point in the past IHG was doing) rather than devaluing their programs and as a result, devaluing a percentage of their customers.
Greed is rampant in business, and IHG has succumbed to that. Being sucked into buying points, credit cards to build points and incentive programs to build points to be used for their highly advertised quarterly PointBreaks program (just to see IHG pull the program without explanation etc) is also Greed by corporate executives passed down to their customer care department through prepared “I’m sorry” scripts when you call in.
Good bye IHG. You are not what you used to be.
BEWARE: IHG doesn’t want to develop loyalty (although they appear to take loyalty and throw you and your points under the bus when they want to), they just want people who have money.
BEWARE: To Anyone in your customer service departments who thinks that their loyalty to IHG is worth something – you should be looking for a new company to work for, with higher ideals for customers and their employees who work for them.
Good luck. We have been loyal for over 25 years…and didn’t get even as much as an e-mail.
Why not complain on twitter?
Hotels in Southern California that are 20,000 points per night. With IHG credit card’s 4th night free comes out to $75/night tax free if buying points during 100% bonus offers. Still great value.
Man,
Barring a dramatic improvement to the program IHG is truly my worst-case-scenario chain where no other option is available moving forward for me.
Well said. The only negative consequence here is for the LOYAL customer.
Very disappointing. Used this in 2019 for Crowne Plaza Beirut and Jeddah. Great deals. Sad to see PointBreaks go.
