White House Could Relax International Travel Restrictions in May

The US Government has today announced an extension of the land border closure between the US, Canada and Mexico until at least April 21, 2021. But the travel restrictions could be gone soon after.

The White House is reportedly looking toward the middle of May to relax restrictions on travel across the borders with Mexico and Canada and on inbound international travel from the U.K., Europe and Brazil. The information comes from CNBC, citing two sources familiar with the matter.

“There is going to be a sea change in mid-May when vaccines are more widely available to everyone,” according to one senior administration official. Discussion has focused on trying to limit the spread of variants domestically as localities make their own decisions on how quickly to reopen.

Vaccinations will play a big part in discussions. A total of 115 million Covid-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the United States. As of Thursday, 12.3% of the public is already fully vaccinated, according to data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The pace of shots has risen to an average of nearly 2.5 million per day for the last week. With the pace continuing to accelerate, that number of administered shots could 200 million before the end of April. That would make the reopening decision much easier the the White House.

  1. I think for the first 6 months or so you may need a test, but for sure you are going to need to have had the jabs (both of them) . BA have already announced that they are going down this route, I await the rest to follow!

  2. Still questions remain:
    1) Do citizens still need a negative test to enter the country?
    2) Will only the vaccinated be allowed to board planes? I have heard this has been discussed.
