Match AAdvantage and Dividend Miles TODAY!
Today is the last day to match your AAdvantage and Dividend Miles accounts so that they can easily be combined. By matching the information now, your accounts should seamlessly merge together. (Which may happen as soon as tomorrow.)
I had speculated that American Airlines might offer some sort of incentive for members to match their accounts, unfortunately that hasn’t happened. If you were waiting to match your accounts for some reason then do it now. This is your last chance.
What If the Match Doesn’t Work
But what if you try to match your account and it doesn’t work? This is exactly what happened to my wife’s account. It took a little while, but I finally figured out why.
When you login to either your AAdvantage or Dividend Miles accounts it will prompt you to enter the other account number to link. Most people will just enter the number and their accounts will be magically linked. Some people aren’t so lucky.
If that happens to you, login to both your AAdvantage and Dividend Miles accounts and go to the profile screens. This way you can compare them side by side.
- AAdvantage go to: “My Account” then “Personal Information & Password”
- Dividend Miles go to: “Account Information”
Thankfully Dividend Miles makes it easy to see all of the information in one place. Unfortunately AAdvantage holds your information in several different places. To fix the problem, go one by one confirming that the following items match:
- Name
- Date of Birth
- Email address
- Physical address
- Phone number
Note that the date of birth is listed in the name section on the AAdvantage website. If this is blank then the accounts won’t properly match. That is exactly what happened with my wife’s account.
Since the date of birth doesn’t show on the main screen, I didn’t know the field was blank. It wasn’t until I clicked to edit the name information that I found her date of birth was blank. As soon as I filled it in, the accounts matched perfectly.
Conclusion
If your AAdvantage and Dividend Miles accounts are not matching then it is probably a simple fix. Taking the five minutes now to find the discrepancy is probably easier than having to figure out how to combine the accounts later. Don’t wait, because today is your last day!

I had a similar problem. In my case, it turned out that I had supplied a middle name on the US Airways account, but not on the AA one. Unfortunately, the AA website would not let me edit my name, despite the fact that they have a big EDIT button next to the name field. I finally gave up and removed the middle name from my US Air account. Then they combined. *sigh* I would rather have added the middle name so it matched my driver’s license, but no dice.
It still amazes me that 10 years into the WWW era there are still so many major companies with defective websites.
But you did the right thing I think. Get them to match by whatever means necessary to avoid a hassle later.
Hopefully they will fix the name change issue. My guess is that feature has been removed because they don’t want people editing their names because of fraud. With that said, middle names aren’t a big deal.
AA had my wife’s birthday wrong…thankfully it didn’t interfere with our travels, even though they are supposed to supply this info to TSA and we recently flew international with them. The problem is you can edit everything in your AA profile, except your sex and birthday…utterly stupid. To make it more fun you have to fax or e-mail a photo id showing the correct DOB (they won’t take your word for it), to have their incorrect information fixed.

I had trouble getting hubby’s accounts linked. Doing the side by side comparison, I discovered he had the wrong birth year on USAirways. I corrected that, and accounts linked up.
Once your accounts are merged can you still redeem miles for USAirways awards?
Doing this is only matching your accounts so the company knows which accounts to merge. We aren’t sure of the date when the two accounts will merge other than it is in the next few weeks. Once the accounts merge then you will not be able to book award with Dividend Miles since that program will cease to exist.
