A Brief History, The Brain Cloud, A New Logo & What That Means to Me

New Logo & A Brief History

For those who haven’t been reading the site before, Miles to Memories started back in 2007 as Family Round the World. In fact, the familyrtw.com domain still redirects to this site. Back then I documented our 18 month backpacking trip. It was fun and all of that information is in the archives. Of course time, tends to date things and it certainly has done that to our original logo.

As you might be able to tell, I created that myself and I am definitely not a professional graphic designer. A few years later while I was only blogging sporadically, I sanctioned a new logo. One that I felt was cleaner and more in line with the design principles of the time. It looked something like this.

If that looks familiar, then it probably is. In 2013 I began writing full time and also noticed that in addition to travel I was covering miles/points topics. My family is still an important topic for me, but it isn’t the only focus of this site. Thus, a new name was needed. I struggled to find a name, but then one night I woke up at about 3am with the name in my head. Miles to Memories. I wasn’t quite ready to get a new logo, so I just modified the one I had.

So “family” became “Miles”, “Round the World” became “To Memories” and “A guide to family world travel” became “Travel realized”. A few other small tweaks and a new logo and new brand were born. That same brand that is going strong today!

The New Logo

About a year ago we completely redesigned the website from top to bottom. We made it more mobile friendly and streamlined the design. The theme that we had been using was archaic at best and this new one looks and feels so much better and it is much faster as well.

At the time of the new design launch, I had wanted to get a new logo together, but it got put on the back burner. Then time sort of flew by and it didn’t happen. Earlier this year I was on a trip with a designer friend of mine talking about logos. He is a really busy guy, so it took some time, but eventually we came up with the new logo you see today. Of course, it didn’t happen right away. This is the first version of the logo:miles to memories logo

As you can tell, the name and font hasn’t changed, because I loved it instantly. I also didn’t have an issue with the braincloud, but thought it didn’t represent what this site is quite as much as I would have liked. Also, some people were a little freaked out by the braincloud. It was back to the drawing board. After a few more options, we settled on this.

You will see the logo in various formats and forms and I even have versions that correspond to banners for recaps and other types of posts. I love this logo because it represents what travel is to me. It is about my family and it is about the memories we create. Sometimes I talk about aviation and sometimes crazy deals, but in the end this is what matters. So there I am at the helm, Jasmine by my side with Shawn Reece and Ellie in tow. The way it should be.

Conclusion

So there you have it. A brief history of the site and why you now see a new logo. I feel the new logo is a vast improvement and one that was needed in order to move the site forward. You can now see the new logo rolled out across our various social media channels, in our daily newsletter and around the website as well.

Thanks for being the best readers in the world! The growth of this site and its readership has been amazing to see and amazing to be a part of. Have a great weekend!
