My Experience Enrolling in Discover Alerts
Discover Alerts was launched this past summer. I didn’t pay much attention to it at first but I recently signed up for it. Discover offers the service free to current credit card holders. It will only take 60 seconds of your time and it is well worth it. I will show you the step by step process and explain why you should enroll in the program.
This new perk goes along great with the other perks Discover offers cardmembers!
Discover Alerts Details
Discover Alerts comes with 2 services (taken from their website):
- They monitor thousands of risky websites on the dark web – a hidden area of the Internet where stolen Social Security numbers can be traded or sold for the purposes of identity theft and fraud. This process is also called internet scanning or internet surveillance. If we find your Social Security number, we’ll send you an alert and help you take action.
- They also monitor your Experian credit report and notify you whenever any new credit account is reported to your Experian credit file, even if it’s not a Discover account. In most cases, you will probably recognize it as an account you opened. However, if you don’t recognize the account, we’ll let you know what steps you need to take to close the account, inform the credit bureaus and reduce your risk of future fraudulent activity.
The second part is nothing new and has been offered by Discover for free for a long time. It is essentially just credit monitoring. A lot of credit cards offer this perk.
The first part is what is interesting. Scanning the dark web for your social security number is a new protection measure. With all of the corporate hacks, looking at you Equifax, Uber, and Tio/PayPal, extra security is almost a necessity these days!
Step By Step Sign Up Process
Start out by going to the Discover Alerts website.
Click the log in to activate link and you will be taken to this page after logging in:
Make sure the email address on file is correct and click I Agree. That will take you to this page:
Then you can choose to enroll in text alerts if you want. And that is it – your identity is now more secure!
Conclusion
More security is always better. I love it when corporations, especially banks, add more perks and services that benefit their customers. This is a nice addition by Discover.
Would I sign up for a Discover card just to get this service? Probably not, but if you are already a card holder there is no reason not to take advantage of it. It is FREE and signing up will take you less than a minute. That minute could save you thousands of dollars in the long run!
Have you signed up for the service in the past? How would you rate it so far?
