3 Newer But Mostly Underwhelming Credit Card Offers

There are three newer credit card welcome offers that have been launched over the past few weeks and they are all kind of meh. I decided to cover them for you because something could seem meh to me but it may work perfectly for you.  The offers that were recently released were for the Chase Southwest cards and the American Express Green business card.

Some Of These Offers Have Changed or Ended

Chase Southwest Public Offers

First up are the Chase Southwest personal card offers.  These were recently increased but they are coming a few months too early for maxing out the Companion Pass and the minimum spend required is high.  Here are the details for the card offers:

  • 40,000 points bonus after $1,000 in spend within 3 months of card membership.
  • An additional 20,000 bonus points after an additional $12,000 in spend within the first 12 months of card membership.

This offer is showing for all three versions of the Chase Southwest personal cards.  I would say if you were interested in these the Chase Southwest Priority is best for frequent Southwest flyers because of the perks.  If you are only an occasional flyer then the Chase Southwest Plus is the best option with its reasonable $69 annual fee.

The standard offer for these cards used to be 50,000 or 60,000 points for $3,000 of spend within 3 months.  This offer requires a lot more spend than the normal offer. I do think these tiered bonuses are what we will see more of in the future.

Amex Business Green Card

I don’t see this offer really being enticing to anyone.  The new “welcome offer” for the Amex Business Green card is as follows:

  • Earn 3X Membership Rewards points on combined purchases on the card at U.S. restaurants, on hotel stays booked directly with hotels, and on airfare purchased directly from airlines in the first 3 months of Card Membership.
  • Max $50,000 in spend earns the 3x rate.
  • Offer ends 11/6/19.

The offer for this card is usually 5,000 Membership Rewards points, if anything at all, but I don’t see this as being that much better.  So many cards cover these bonus categories and they are not limited to 3 months of earning.

Chase Southwest Targeted Offer

I received a targeted Southwest Plus card offer in the snail mail.  I found it kind of comical since I am way over 5/24. If you received this offer as well it is actually better than the current public offer.  The offer is as follows:

  • Earn 10 points per dollar on up to $6,000 in purchases within the first 6 months (max of 60,000 points)
  • The $69 annual fee is not waived.

This offer is giving you 10,000 more points than the public offer for $6,000 less in spend.  If you received this offer it says you just have to apply before October 17th.  That date lines up pretty well with getting the Companion Pass for 2 years.  But since you have 6 months to complete the spend you actually could sign up now but wait to complete the required spend until your December statement cuts.  This offer is the winner of the bunch.

Final Thoughts

The targeted Southwest Plus offer is the only one with teeth but not everyone can get it. It is the one offer out of these three that I would jump on.

I really don’t see the value in the Amex Green Business card offer. Most of those bonus areas are already matched or beat by other cards like the Chase Ink Preferred.  And that isn’t limited to 3 months of earning and it has a similar annual fee!

I would wait and see if something better comes along publicly for the Southwest cards.  The timing isn’t quite right and the minimum spend for the offer is too high.  Hopefully it drops down at the end of the fourth quarter.
