While I don’t have much to report from this layover time, I can now say that my dad is now happily married. We attended his wedding on Saturday July 21, 2007 and everything went off without a hitch. It was a small ceremony and the newlyweds seem to be incredibly happy. I have to admit, with the situation as it is, I couldn’t be happier for them.
The rest of our first week back was spent catching up with family and a few friends. Jasmine & Shawn Reece spent a few days at her sister’s house with Jasmine’s family, while I spent time catching up with my family on the other side of town. It did feel weird to be without them for a few days, considering that I spent every minute of the past ninety days within a few feet of them.
Half way through the week, Jasmine and I were blessed to get two days to ourselves. Unfortunately, with all of the errands we had to run, we hardly found time to just be. We did get a deal on a nice boutique hotel in Las Vegas that provided a nice relaxation spot for us in the evenings. The hotel is call The Artisan and features plenty of beautiful paintings from up and coming artists. We were glad to get some alone time, since god only knows when we will get the opportunity again.
We finally left Las Vegas on Saturday July 28, 2007 headed for Los Angeles. My dad and his wife Gloria were nice enough to drive us down so we wouldn’t have to take the bus. (Thanks so much by the way!) Since some of Jasmine’s family lives in L.A. we stayed with them on Saturday night before flying out on Sunday evening the 29th.
Just before we left for the airport on Sunday evening however, I checked the airline’s website and was told that our flight to Guatemala was cancelled. After forty-five minutes on hold, I was able to reschedule our flight for two days later. Luckily we didn’t incur any extra expenses since we were staying at her family’s house. I didn’t let myself get angry with the airline, since I am sure delays and cancellations are going to happen pretty frequently from here on out.
Fortunately, on Tuesday July 31st our flight was not cancelled and we made the flight to Guatemala. The whole situation was not without irony however. I got a bit of food poisoning during our extra time in L.A. and spent most of the flight in the bathroom. The combination of the food poisoning and the flight being a red eye left me completely wiped as we landed in this very foreign land. I will leave you there for next time, but it is pretty safe to say I was feeling rather sorry for myself at this point!
