Oktoberfest Is Back in Munich After Two Year Hiatus
Beer lovers rejoice!!! Germany’s annual Oktoberfest festival is back this fall, after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The Wiesn will take place,” Munich’s Economic Officer and Head of Oktoberfest Clemens Baumgärtner said. Oktoberfest, known locally as d’Wiesn, will be held without any Covid-19 restrictions.
The traditional tapping of the first beer barrel in the Schottenhamel tent by the Lord Mayor will mark the start of the 187th Oktoberfest on September 17, 2022 at 12 noon. The event goes on until October 3rd, which is also Germany’s national day.
The Oktoberfest, which was first first held in 1810 in honor of the marriage of Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria to Princess Therese, has been canceled usually during wars and in the last two years because of the pandemic.
During the two week event, large amounts of beer are usually consumed. In 2014 for example, that amounted to over 2 million gallons of beer, which is the current record. This year there are 487 beer breweries to choose from, with the first beer tents opening at 9 a.m. in the morning and closing at 10:30 p.m.
But there’s much more to enjoy than just beer. There are attractions, such as amusement rides and games. There is also a wide variety of traditional foods.
