Days 246-248 Saturday-Monday December 22-24, 2007 – Christchurch, New Zealand
Come Saturday morning we set out to see Christchurch with excitement. I have to admit that part of our excitement was the anticipation for our Christmas morning flight to Australia, but we were also genuinely excited to be in Christchurch, which is nicknamed The Garden City. One eighth of the cities’ acreage is dedicated to parks or gardens and the local population takes great pride in their green space. We were out of the cabin by 10am.
Driving into a large city can always be a crap shoot. Originally we weren’t sure how much parking would cost in the city so we looked into taking the bus. After inquiring at the holiday park, we learned that round trip bus fares would cost in excess of $10 NZD and we figured parking wouldn’t be much more given that it was a Saturday. Our first stop in the CBD was at the rental car agency where we changed our arrangement for dropping off the car. (We decided to drop it off at their airport location.) We weren’t sure if the rental car company would accommodate us, but they were friendly and with a couple of keystrokes in the computer we were back on the confusing one way streets of Christchurch’s central business district. After several minutes, we found a small street with plenty of open parking spaces just a couple of blocks from the CBD. Even better for us, these spaces had no time limits and parking there was completely free.
