Is it Possible to Get Amex Marriott Business Bonus if You Had SPG Card?

The Amex Marriott Bonvoy Business card was released last year after the Marriott/SPG merger. It offers some good benefits and also sign up bonuses up to 100K points. One issue with the card is that it was not considered a new product when it was first released. In the terms it states:

Welcome offer not available to applicants who have or have had this product or The Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express.

But some new data points show that this might not be enforced. This thread on r/churning has two data points showing that people have received the bonus on a new Amex Marriott Bonvoy Business card, even though they had the Amex SPG Business card in the past.

This is very interesting, although probably not sure proof that you will get a bonus.

Also keep in mind that there’s also these restrictions on the bonus. Offer not available to applicants who:

  • have or have had the Marriott BonvoyTM Premier Business from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase, or the Marriott Bonvoy BusinessTM from Chase, or the Marriott Rewards Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 30 days
  • have acquired the Marriott Bonvoy BoundlessTM from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott BonvoyTM Premier from Chase or the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days, or
  • received a new cardmember bonus in the last 24 months on the Marriott Bonvoy BoundlessTM from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott BonvoyTM Premier Plus from Chase or the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase.

Conclusion

These two data points are encouraging, so if you really want more Marriott points, you can try applying and see if you get the Amex pop-up.

Let us know if you have have any similar data points.

    • Because the Marriott card is the same as the old SPG card. So if you have had the SPG card in the past you may get the pop up saying you are not eligible for the Marriott version.

  1. Last month, I received an email offer from Amex for the Bonvoy Business card. The offer was for 100,000 bonus points plus a $100 statement credit after $5,000 spend in the first three months. The terms didn’t have any lifetime restrictions. I have had the SPG Business card in the past but closed the card last year. I applied and was immediately approved. Crossing fingers now for the bonus.
