Rakuten Cash Back Visa No Longer Accepting New Applications
The Rakuten (Ebates) Cash Back Visa is gone for good as far as new applications go. But there’s also bad news for current cardholders.
When you go to the application page now, you will see the following message: “Thank you for your interest. We are no longer accepting applications for the Rakuten Cash Back Visa® Credit Card.”
This is a valuable product for those who used the Rakuten shopping portal often. It is also a rare Visa card that earned either cashback or membership Rewards points.
It’s not 100% clear if the Rakuten Cash Back Visa is gone for good, but some information provided by phone reps indicate so. And even current cardholders won’t be able to use the card for long. Here’s some information that two phone reps have provided:
- Last date that current cardholders can make purchases will be 09/17/22 and all accounts will be closed shortly after.
- Current cardholders are NOT being transferred to another financial institution.
- The credit program will be discontinued and cardholders will not be transferred as that’s not an option
The card earns an extra 3% Cash Back on qualifying purchases made through Rakuten.com, In-Store Cash Back offers, Rakuten Hotels and Rakuten travel. If you choose to earn Membership Rewards instead, the card becomes even more valuable. You can see more details about the card here.

Received mine yesterday. September 17th last day. 🙂
Any insight on when current card holders should be receiving official word that the account will be closing?
Synchrony Bank has a rotten web portal. Preauthorizations would often tie up credit limit for weeks . . . or, in one case, months. The card became unusable as a practical matter. Rakuten needs to go with an Amex co-branded card.
