Amex Explains Reason for Unexpected $250 Hilton Aspire Credits

Two days ago we covered reports of some American Express cardholders receiving an unexpected $250 gift in their accounts. We rushed to check our accounts and none of us in the MtM team received a credit.

I thought it might be coronavirus related and maybe a credit for those who have the annual fee coming up, who had not used it yet. I was wrong. American Express reached out today with an explanation for the statement credits. They said the following:

There were limited instances where a small population of Card Members received a manual $250 Resort credit, as a prior credit they received was applied to the incorrect anniversary year.

These credits and subsequent corrections are not tied to a broader COVID 19-related relief effort, and Card Members will be receiving communications explaining the reasoning for the credit shortly if they have not already.

Conclusion

So yeah, they are not giving out credits for those of us who are not able to use them during the pandemic. If you received a $250 credit on the Aspire card, let us know if this explanation makes sense.

  1. It doesn’t seem to me that your conclusion matches their explanation of “a prior credit they received was applied to the incorrect anniversary year.”

  2. AMEX has a history of issuing random & confusing credits. Better than debits, but would sure be nice if there was an explanation that made sense at either posting or a subsequent email.

  3. Any data on what happens to the credit if the charge is refunded a few months following the credit? I’m sure I’m not alone in having my flight which I used the credits on cancelled and the charge refunded. I know I’ve heard some data about clawbacks when abuse suspected but I would hope Amex would not claw back when it’s a clear COVID cancellation months after the credit was used.
