Reports of Referral & Upgrade Offers for SPG Luxury

Reports of Referral & Upgrade Offers for SPG Luxury

The SPG Luxury card from American Express was launched today to much fanfare, even though I have no idea why.  Some people in our Facebook Group are reporting getting upgrade offers on their personal SPG card.  Others have reported being able to refer people for a 25,000 point bonus.  It is impressive how quickly these two offers were made available by American Express.

Details

The upgrade offer is being reported as 100,000 points after paying the $450 annual fee and spending $5,000 within the first 3 months.  That is the same as the public offer except you don’t have to use a hard pull for the card.  Although American Express doesn’t always pull your credit for applications anyway.  Upgrading is a little more tempting since you are ensured there will be no hard pull, it wouldn’t count against Chase 5/24 and you don’t take up an Amex slot with a new card.

Other members are also reporting being able to refer a friend to the card for 25,000 points.  Most banks don’t come out with these offers right away since there is so much interest in new cards as it is.  That is a customer friendly move on Amex’s part. If you have a friend or spouse etc. that was interested in the card see if you can snag a few easy points.

Conclusion

These are two customer friendly moves on American Express’ part.  I am not sure if I would take the upgrade offer since I don’t think the card offers much value but it would be a lot more tempting versus doing a regular application.  Let me know if you received either offer in the comments section.

      • downgrade to what? Isn’t the SPG personal going away? is it possible to downgrade to another type of amex..say Hilton or gold?

        • Thanks.

I believe the SPG personal is staying?

Other interesting data point — talked to a rep briefly, said that current year spend would count towards platinum status if upgraded to SPG luxury. Might push me over the fence for a year of upgrade.

  1. My spend up til 8.1.18 was really good, too! I was planning on canceling it anyway – this sorry offer expedited that decision.

I’ve got the biz & RC cards for M hotel spend which is quite enough lol. AMEX will likely PC the RC to this anyway in due time is my guess.

    • Check you Amex Offers are on the SPG card after signing in to Amex’s site. You can also check all credit cards when logged into amex’s website.
