Southwest Airlines is different from other airlines in that they only allow you to book your flights about six months in advance. As of yesterday the latest you could book a flight was June 30, 2014. Today they extended out their schedule to August 8, 2014.
Normally I wouldn’t post about this, but there is roughly two months left before Southwest devalues their Rapid Rewards Points. For bookings made before March 31, the cost is 60 points per dollar. That will increase to 70 points per dollar after March 31.
Southwest Airlines tends to extend out their schedule every 2-3 months, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we do not see another extension until after the March 31st devaluation. This means that if you have a trip planned for the summer, now may be the best time to book with points. Who knows, maybe they will come through in late March with another schedule extension that will allow everyone to book trips through the fall at lower rates, but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
