Target REDCard Discount with Gift Cards
Target has made several changes to their policies over the past few years. For example, you used to be able to purchase merchant gift cards online with Target gift cards and still get a 5% discount if you had a REDcard linked to your account. This was a great deal and one that many took advantage of. Then, it died.
What didn’t die though was the ability to do the same thing with actual merchandise (online only). Up until this weekend you could pay for a purchase entirely with gift cards and still get a 5% discount as long as a REDcard was linked to your account. That doesn’t work any longer.
Now, you only get a 5% discount for the portion of the purchase that is actually charged to your REDcard. Since it has been possible to get around 10% off gift cards from their once per year deal or the occasional sale such as last week’s from CardCash, the savings were substantial. Today they are ~5% less of course.
Conclusion
My guess is this was always their intended policy and it took time for them to close the loophole on their site. As someone who purchases many things from Target I can say this online double dip was appreciated and will be missed.
