Thailand Will Introduce a Tourist Tax Next Year

Thailand, one of the most popular destinations in Southeast Asia, will introduce a new tourist tax next year.

Thailand’s Centre for Economic Situation Administration has approved a plan to implement a 500 baht (around US$15) tax for tourist for a “tourism transformation fund”. Bangkok Post reports that the nation’s Tourism and Sports Ministry would begin collecting the new visitor fee next year. The tax is intended to subsidize tourism-related projects.

Yuthasak Supasorn, the governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand, said they aim to collect 5 Billion baht within the first year. That figure is based on the expectation of 10 million foreign arrivals in 2022. He said the fund isn’t intended to remediate financial losses suffered due to the pandemic, but rather to support long-term, local economic growth.

It has yet to be determined how the fee will be collected from arriving tourists. But measure are expected to be in place by next year.

As Thailand reopens, it wants to transform its operations, putting a focus on high-value and sustainable tourism. This fund will provide some of the funding to achieve that goal. The  Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Tourism and Sports Ministry, and other sector authorities will determine how the fund will be set up and exactly how it will operate. The same committee will also set criteria as to which projects will be eligible for funding.

  1. They added a 500 baht tax some years ago. You actually had to pay the 500 baht cash when you arrived. Eventually they built it into the ticket price as a tax there so you didn’t have to pay in cash. So this is just a new tax on top of the other taxes already in the ticket.

Impossible to visit the last year and a half because of their tight rules so their answer is always more money
