The Passport Index 2023 Update, United States Still Ranks Third
The Passport Index has published its latest update today, revealing that both China and India’s Mobility Scores have fallen, with India experiencing the largest global drop on the Index this year.
The Index also showed drops in the scores of other large Asian economies including Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. This decline indicates the extent to which these countries have not capitalized on the global uptick in mobility recorded last year.
There are some countries with increased Mobility Scores. Kenya, Vatican City and Monaco have the largest increases this year, scoring 2 points higher. The score for the United United States passport has not changed, remaining at 173.
The United States passport is ranked third in the list, alongside eight other countries such as Portugal and United Kingdom. In second place there are 11 countries with a score of 174, including Germany, Spain, France, Luxembourg and South Korea. At the top of the list is United Arab Emirates with the best score of 181.
The Passport Index is an interactive passport ranking tool. It is the only real-time global ranking of the world’s passports, updated as frequently as new visa waivers and changes are implemented.
To determine the individual rank of each passport the ranking considers things like visa-free travel, visa on arrival (VOA), eTA and eVisa options. It also looks at the United Nations Development Programme Human Development Index 2018 (UNDP HDI) as a tie breaker. The UNDP HDI is a significant measure on the country’s perception abroad.
