Toys ‘R Us Is Still Alive & Well In Asia
As of now Toys ‘R Us is a thing of the past in the United States. Yes, there are various plans to bring the brand back, but alas for now at least it is just another defunct retailer of the past joining the likes of Montgomery Ward and Circuit City.
Like Visiting An Old Friend
Due to my increased reselling in 2016-2017 I spent a decent amount of time in Toys ‘R Us stores. It wasn’t my biggest source, but I was in there enough to begin to feel familiar with the chain and its stores. I like many others was sad to see that fateful day come when TRU was shuttered forever.
Except it wasn’t, at least not outside of the United States. Toys ‘R Us actually still lives on in several places around the world and has a large presence in Asia. According to Wikipedia, Toys ‘R Us has Asian stores in Brunei, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, India, Singapore among others. I recently visited one of their Singapore locations and it felt so much like its U.S. counterparts it was scary.
Anyone who has been in a toy store lately knows the big brands that kids love. From Baby Alive to L.O.L. for the girls to Transformers and Star Wars for the boys, there is something for everyone. And of course, what would a Toys ‘R Us be without a hefty (and expensive) Lego section to suck you dry.
Even Geoffrey the Giraffe makes his appearance in the form of a cool I love Singapore poster. Something tells me I am not the only nostalgic American to wander through this store in the touristy Orchard Rd. area of Singapore. 🙂
As with anything in Singapore prices are quite a bit higher than in the United States. I even saw toys that had long been gone and clearance in the U.S. at high prices in Singapore. On average I would say everything was 25-50% more than it would cost back home, but keep in mind the prices you see are inclusive of tax. And thankfully the experience of walking around is free.

If you’re ever somewhere and stumble across a Toys ‘R Us take a peak inside, walk around and don’t forget to sing:
