United Creates New Economy (Non-Changeable) Fare Class
United Airlines raised some concerns today. The airline is messing around with its fare classes in some markets and introducing what it calls Economy (non-changeable) instead of Basic Economy.
But these fares are not Basic Economy, as they are less restrictive, expect for the “non-changeable part. You get carry-ons and checked bags.
Looks like @united is screwing with Basic Economy, calling it "Economy (non-changable)" in some markets. It returns even if the "Shows Basic Economy fares" toggle is off
It comes with seat & carry-on bag (Basic doesn't) and it's very easy to accidentally choose it if not careful pic.twitter.com/xcxFmD1us7

Also when you select Basic Economy you get a warning about the restrictions. That’s not the case with this new fare class.
However, it doesn’t look like United Airlines is bringing back change-fees. The new Economy (non-changeable) fare seems to be specific to Japan. This is due “to quirks in how fares are marketed”, and a United Airlines spokesperson confirmed that there are “no plans to expand this fare outside of Japan.”
Lots of concern today that @United is bringing back change fees.
Rest assured, it's NOT happening.
The new "economy non-changeable" fare is specific to Japan due to quirks in how fares are marketed, and United has "no plans to expand this fare outside of Japan," says a spox.

United Airlines was the first carrier to get rid of change fees on most tickets back in 2020. And this is supposed to be a permanent, except for Basic Economy fares. Let’s hope that they don’t go back on their word!
