United Plans to Order More Than 100 New Widebody Aircraft
United Airlines is planning on making a huge order of long-haul aircraft to replenish its widebody fleet. The potential announcement is expected by December and it includes over 100 aircraft.
United Airlines has been in discussions with the plane makers for months, as reported by Bloomberg, and the order could include the Airbus A350 and the Boeing 787. United Airlines Chief Executive Scott Kirby told pilots attending a Denver training session that the carrier is planning a “triple-digit” order to upgrade its fleet.
The potential multi-billion dollar order comes at a time when international and business travel continues to recover, especially after a strong summer season. United itself has is preparing for more demand next year with more flights to Europe and elsewhere.
United currently operates an all-Boeing widebody fleet, including 53 Boeing 767s, which are 25 years old on average. United Airlines also has 96 Boeing 777s with an average ago of 18 years. These would be the most likely aircraft sought to be replaced with the order.
The carrier also has 64 Boeing 787s, which are relatively new, with an average 5.5 years of age.
