Days 240-241 Sunday-Monday December 16-17, 2007 – Te Anau & Milford Sound, New Zealand

It seems that everyone we met while traveling through New Zealand always mentioned Milford Sound as one of the must see places in the country.  Everyone talks about Milford Sound’s remoteness and beauty and they say the only way to truly experience it is to get out on the water.  While getting to Milford Sound and out on a boat is not an easy or cheap thing to do, we never considered skipping the experience.

Milford Sound is located in Fiordland National Park and is the wettest place in New Zealand.  It receives around 7010mm or 276 inches of rain per year.  Upon leaving Te Anau the weather was clear, but we knew not to expect this to hold up and sure enough, the closer we got to Milford Sound on the two hour drive, the nastier the weather became.  The other thing we knew given our conversations with others, was that in Milford Sound, wet weather is a good thing.

  1. Hi Shawn, Jasmine & Shawn Reece,

I have been following along on your journey. I applaud all of you for your adventurous spirit and great detail in describing your experiences.

I am so proud of all 3 of you for taking such a life changing journey. It will always have a profound affect on your lives in the future.

Shawn, I am so impressed with your writing skills. I hope you might pursue some kind of journalistic career in the future. I love reading your commentary and the photos have been great. Maybe you could be one of those people who write tours guides for the inexperienced. Or something. You have definately inherited the writing and photo skills from your dad.

Where to next, I can’t wait to see.

    Love you all,

    Ellen
