Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Free Checked Bag

The Bank of America Alaska Airlines Visa Signature card doesn’t carry many benefits. For most people the main draw of the card is that it gives 25,000 Alaska Airlines miles after approval and can be churned repeatedly. The card also comes with a $99 + tax companion ticket which is quite valuable as well.

Unlike many other airline co-branded credit cards, the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature doesn’t come with a free checked bag. Well, that is “sort of” changing. From February 1, 2015 through April 30, 2015 holders of the Visa Signature card and others traveling on their reservation will receive a free checked bag when flying on Alaska Airlines.

Since this is a benefit of many other airline cards, I have to wonder if this is a test run to see how popular giving a free bag is. Lets hope they are considering making it a permanent feature of the Alaska Airlines Visa Signature Card, although I still prefer to carry-on my luggage.

Terms

*Alaska Airlines Visa Signature® consumer (non-business) credit card holders and all passengers traveling in the same reservation, will receive their first checked bag free on qualifying reservations. The Mileage Plan™ number of the primary Alaska Airlines Visa Signature consumer credit card holder must be in the reservation at the time of check-in. To qualify, reservations must be on flights marketed by Alaska Airlines and operated by Alaska Airlines, Horizon Air, SkyWest or PenAir for travel between February 1, 2015, and April 30, 2015.

You can find the full terms and details of the promotion here.

Conclusion

This is a nice benefit for holders of the credit card who don’t currently have elite status. While I’ll stick with my carry-on backpack, I know some of you have to check that bag!
