Breaking News: Amex and Chase Will Share Issuing Rights for Marriott

Breaking News: Amex and Chase Will Share Issuing Rights for Marriott

Today, we finally learned which issuer has won the battle for Marriott. Ladies and Gentlemen, the winner is YOU. Although, if we had to pick the winner between issuers, we’re going with Amex because they were certainly the under-dog in this fight.  According to Bloomberg, Amex and Chase will have dual issuing rights for Marriott’s Collection of cards. New co-branded products will be released sometime next year. Until then, things will remain as-is with Amex carrying SPG and Chase carrying Marriott.

Why Should You Be Excited?

What’s really interesting, is the supposed break down of cards by issuer. Amex will issue a super premium card and a small business card, while Chase will issue mass-consumer and premium-consumer versions. What does that mean exactly? Both issuers will release new products next year. I don’t want to go overboard here, but this is the most exciting credit card announcement, I’ve heard in a long time.

I am so excited about the idea of earning four new sign-up bonuses for one of my favorite hotel programs.

Conclusion

While we don’t know how the merge will affect either Loyalty Program’s members, we do know that there will be several opportunities to earn points with these new cards. SPG Card holders should be especially happy given Amex’s once per lifetime rule. This would be a great time to sign-up for the SPG Personal Card (Details here) and the SPG Business Card (Details here). Note: Normally I would wait for a better sign-up bonus on these cards, but 25,000 SPG points is extremely valuable and I would hate to see you miss out on the opportunity.

  1. Trying to decide how good an idea it is to apply for the SPG cards now.. Wondering if getting the SPG might ruin my chances for a better sign up bonus once the new cards come out next year. I don’t have either the personal or biz right now.

    • I would definitely get the personal card, I don’t think that’s going to affect it because it’s certainly not a super-premium card so they won’t say it’s the same thing. Also, you may be able to get a different product once the SPG card goes away. As for the business card, if it were me, I would do it, but I can definitely see both sides of the coin.

  2. Do you think that the current SPG Amex will just be converted to a SPG/Marriott Amex (in that they mail present SPG Amex a new card with a new logo but the account is the same) so that there will be no way to get another sign-up bonus ?

    • IMO the premium card is definitely going to be a new product and you will be able to get the bonus. As for the SPG Small Business card and the new one, I’m not as certain. It seems a little crazy to me that they would try to say it’s not a different product because it will be earning different points- but you never know.
