American Express Business Rewards Gold Choose A Category
The American Express Business Rewards Gold card recently underwent a change. Previously the card earned 3x points on airfare purchased directly through an airline and 2x in four other bonus categories. (Up to $100,000 in spending per year in each category.) Now, you can choose which of the five categories earn 3x, with the others earning 2x.
The bonus categories you have to choose from are:
- Airfare
- U.S. Advertising in Select Media
- U.S. Shipping
- Select Hardware/Software/Cloud Computing
- U.S. Gas Stations
How To Select Your 3x Bonus Category on the American Express Business Rewards Gold Card
Each year you can select your category during the open enrollment period from December 1 through January 31. Since this is the first year, you can still select your category if you haven’t yet. To start, go to open.com/businessgold and login.
Once logged in, scroll down and you should see your card listed along with each of the categories. Select the bubble corresponding to the category that you would like to earn 3x points in for the year.
After selecting your category, scroll down to the terms and conditions. You must scroll through all of the terms in order to activate the “I agree, Submit” button. Once this is done, click the button to confirm your category selection.
After clicking submit, you should receive a Thank You and confirmation of the category chosen. As you can see from the screenshot, I chose gas stations as my 3x earning category for 2015, since I don’t have enough spending in the other categories to justify choosing them.
Best Offer
I got the American Express Business Rewards Gold card back in November with the 75,000 Membership Rewards bonus offer. That offer may still be available, but I have only been able to replicate the 50,000 version when checking today. (Click through to that post for more info.)
Conclusion
I am really glad that American Express decided to make this change with the Business Rewards Gold card. It provides greater flexibility and a greater overall value now that I can choose the bonus category. Now off to the gas station!
